"I conceived the idea for Malevolent in March 2022 when I was just getting ready to go to college, and in the back of my mind I had this lingering thought that if my biological dad were to be alive, he would have been so happy to see me as a grown adult. My biological father had passed away when I was just two years old, leaving behind only fragmented stories from family members. Through these accounts, I came to understand that my father was an incredibly humble and empathetic man—qualities I, as his son, have always aspired to embody.
Malevolent emerged from my desire to explore the depths of grief and the powerful hold it can have over our lives when left unaddressed. The film's characters, Alex and Riley, are an embodiment of my personal experiences with loss and the lingering effects it can have on one's life. Drawing from my own emotions, and with immense help from my friend, we crafted a narrative that centers on two siblings, one of whom is struggling to cope with the loss of the other, trapped within the confines of their home and searching for a means of escape."

In the psychological concept of Dualism*, the mind and body are separate entities. When the mind loses control of the body, the soul takes the mind's job to support the body. However, the soul becomes vulnerable to evil entities by taking over the mind. Only in the most dire circumstances does this ever happen.
Grief, with its profound emotional turmoil, can create a state of mental vulnerability where our perception of reality becomes distorted. This vulnerability allows sinister entities to control our thoughts and emotions.
*The above is a revised version of the concept of Dualism that is tailored to fit our story and does not guarantee any scientific accuracy.
